Simple answer: security. After 9/11 attack, the US. Government decided people needed stronger ID to fly or access federal buildings. So, congress passed the real ID ACT in 2005. And here we are in 2025, finally being asked to follow it.

These Five US States Does’nt Needs Real ID?
Not everyone has to rush. Five states have something called an enhanced driver license (EDL). These licenses already meet federal standards. So, if you live in once of these states you can relax (for now).
